There is no right or wrong answer when deciding what type of massage you want. Different types of massage have different benefits; It depends on what works best with you and what you are looking for.
Below, there are descriptions, typical cases for both therapeutic and sports massage. This will hopefully help you decide what type of massage will be best to sooth your aches!
Therapeutic massage is seen to be less affective as relieving deep muscle tightness, less helpful at aiding recovery from injuries however, if you are someone who benefits from being relaxed, then this may be what you need.
I have found that therapeutic massages have been more affective at reducing stress, increasing the 'feel good factor'. Sometimes what you think is an injury is only stress, built up tension that needs to be released. Therapeutic massage is a great way to relax in a different setting, with someone else helping you relax in ways you cannot do on our own.
Of course, there is a muscular benefit, you are getting a massage and there are biological responses as well as mental responses which are beneficial. These include improved blood flow, improved waste removal and sometimes breaking down 'knots' in the muscles.

Sports massage an image of being more rough, painful only for sports people, this Is not the case:
Sports massage has a focus on targeting issues - either existing issues or preventing issues from occurring using massage. Unlike in therapeutic massage, sports massage will target deeper muscles with the intention of decreasing tightness, knots and increasing blood-flow to the area. On top of the hands-on approach to reduce tension in specific areas of the body, a natural chemical response in the brain will also help relax areas.
Sports massage can be uncomfortable as issues sometimes lie deeper which means there has to be greater force exerted onto areas.
This then causes discomfort. Sometimes a day after a sports massage you may feel a little sore, something you will not feel after a therapeutic massage, however over the next few days benefits will come in as the body recovers fully. This will create a chance for you to do exercises to help recovery longer term/permanently.
