My name is Stephen Hughes and I am qualified as a sports massage therapist as well as training as an elite athlete in Henley-on-Thames.
I have been in and out of injury for the past few years and have experienced a whole range of aches and pains. As a result, I have gathered a better understanding of both the physical and mental challenges of injury and pain. This experience is beneficial not just for my own sporting development but in my role as a sports massage therapist. It has helped me understand the perspective of my clients which has, in turn, created a more wholesome and caring support pathway when you visit Hughes SMT.
From early in my education I enjoyed Biology, P.E. and Anatomy. I developed my knowledge in the subjects when choosing to do a Sport Science Diploma at Henley college, in which I achieved a distinction in all related topics. While studying I spent time working alongside a physiotherapist at Leander Club (an elite rowing club in Henley).
After finishing this qualification, I began my journey specialising in massage. I completed 3 courses: body massage, sports massage level 3 and sports massage level 4, again achieving distinction in the latter.
I have been active from a young age, doing most sports that are readily available in the UK. I have been rowing for 8 years and have won at international events such as Coupe de la Jeunesse for GB and Henley Royal Regatta as well as racing at multiple World Championships and the Rowing World Cup.
As stated above, I have been through many injuries so I have grown a better understanding of both the physical and mental challenges of injury and pain. I find this to be very beneficial for my sport as well as my role as a sports massage therapist.
I have many pages throughout the website, from help on self-treatment to FAQ's about massage.
